Formed in 1963, the Department of Geology and Geophysics is a vibrant cornerstone of the University of Calgary. The Department is internationally and nationally recognized for its strengths in seismic geophysics, petroleum geology, hydrology, petrology and regional tectonics. Grants in aid of research total ~$4million per year, with a similar amount from the Province of Alberta operating grant. In 2004-05, about 300 undergraduates are registered in one of the Department′s five B.Sc. programs - Geology, Geophysics, Applied & Environmental Geology, Earth Science and Environmental Science (Geology). There are also about 125 graduate students in M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs. Together these students represent ~ 10% of all geoscience students in Canada. Most find employment in our local energy industry, while others go on to careers in government research and academia.

Ray Murray first encountered forensic geology in 1973 when he was teaching geology at Rutgers University. An agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms walked into Murray′s office with a bag of dirt, looking for answers. Since then, Murray has worked as a forensic geologist and, with then fellow Rutgers professor John Tedrow, in 1975 published the first textbook on the science, Forensic Geology. Murray served as vice president and professor of geology at the University of Montana from 1977 to 1996 and continues to work in forensic geology. His latest book ″Evidence from the Earth--forensic geology and criminal investigation″ has been published by Mountain Press in May 2004.

Founded over 100 years ago, the Department of Geology at the University of Illinois has a rich tradition of leadership in geoscience – a tradition that continues through today. The Department has been in the forefront of developing fields ranging from sedimentary basin analysis and clay mineralogy, to tectonics and structure, to hydrogeology and paleobiology. The U.S. Geological Survey′s Coastal and Marine Geology Program studies issues in deep-water, coastal, estuarine, and lacustrine realms, such as coral reefs, gas hydrate, coastal hazards (including erosion, hurricane impacts, and tsunamis), and environmental change (including sea-level rise, pollution, and El Nino).
