The Organisation of News Ombudsmen held its 25th anniversary conference in London, hosted by the Guardian, last week. Possibly the most significant thing that delegates did was to vote to hold the conference next year in São Paulo, Brazil. In doing so they departed from the practice of holding their conferences alternately inside and outside the United States, and more usually of holding two out of every three annual meetings in the United States.

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is an organization of journalists, students and media-related professionals that provides quality programs and services to and advocates on behalf of black journalists worldwide. Founded by 44 men and women on December 12, 1975, in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation. Many of NABJ′s 3,300 members also belong to one of the dozens of professional and student chapters that serve black journalists nationwide.

The Online News Association was founded in 1999 by several working members of the online press. ONA is open to journalists from around the world who produce news on the Internet and other digital platforms, and to others with an interest in online news.

Robert C. Maynard, a charismatic leader who changed the face of American journalism, built a four decade career on the cornerstones of editorial integrity, community involvement, improved education and the importance of the family. He was the co-founder of the Institute for Journalism Education, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to expanding opportunities for minority journalists at the nation′s newspapers. In the past 25 years, it has trained hundreds of America′s journalists of color, more than any other organization. In December 1993, following Maynard′s death, the Institute was renamed and is now called the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education.

We are among the biggest and best-established journalists′ unions in the world, with 35,000 members. These members cover the whole range of editorial work staff and freelance, writers and reporters, editors and sub-editors, photographers and illustrators, working in broadcasting, newspapers, magazines, books, on the internet and in public relations. The union was founded in 1907 and has fought for journalists, their pay and conditions, their working rights and their professional freedom ever since. The NUJ has held on to these values through war and peace, boom times and recessions. Despite the attacks in the UK on trade unions and independent journalism, despite the supposed fall in public appreciation of our members′ work, we are thriving. Advertising and reader markets are mature or are declining for newspaper publishers in most parts of the world. With the ongoing digitalisation of media channels, today’s consumers and advertisers have even more possibilities to receive or distribute their information. Together with the Media Management and Transformation Centre at Jönköping International Business School in Sweden, Ifra is carrying out a research project on current and planned business models of newspaper publishers. The report will be based on data from an online questionnaire (available in English, German, French and Spanish) that you can take part in.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press was created in 1970 at a time when the nation′s news media faced a wave of government subpoenas asking reporters to name confidential sources. One case particularly galvanized American journalists. New York Times reporter Earl Caldwell was ordered to reveal to a federal grand jury his sources in the Black Panther organization, threatening his independence as a newsgatherer.
