During the past decade, a substantial body of evidence has indicated that a class of multiprotein complexes known as condensins is one of the key components that directly regulates chromosome architecture and dynamics. The chief function of condensins is to assemble and segregate chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis, although recent studies suggest that they also play much broader roles in the expression and maintenance of the genome.
