Newcastle Research Group
Newcastle Research Group (NRG) is the informal title (used within the geochemical community) for the Fossil Fuels and Environmental Geochemistry Postgraduate Institute (FFEGI) - a department within the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. NRG was formed in 1989 as a result of a major review of tertiary education in the Earth Sciences. It grew from the Organic Geochemistry Unit which was formerly part of the old Geology Department at Newcastle. An existing focus on petroleum geochemistry was expanded to a wider mission to promote interdisciplinary research and Postgraduate teaching in petroleum, low temperature and pollutant geochemistry. To fulfil this mission, the Institute has brought together a unique mix of environmental biogeochemists and petroleum geologists/geochemists, reaching its full academic staff complement of nine in 1992 with the appointment of lecturers in biogeochemistry and microbiology.
