Philip Greenspun, a well known writer and MIT instructor on the development of community web sites, founded photo.net in the early 90′s as a showcase for his own travel writing and photography. It has since developed into the largest general photography community on the web. According to Alexa, it is the second largest photography site (after dpreview) with over 100,000 unique visitors per day and more than 25 million page impressions per month. Philip still helps guide the site as a member of its Board of Directors, although he is no longer involved in day-to-day operations.
